Run a member challenge at your gym

Choose a manageable goal, brief your staff and help members take part without turning every workout into a competition.

In this guide

Choose one reason to run the challenge

Start with a specific task: help new members establish a routine, introduce members to one another, or give a quieter group a reason to return. Choose one priority so your team can explain the challenge in a sentence.

A challenge is an invitation to participate, not a promise of better retention. Decide what you will measure before launch and ask members what made taking part easier or harder.

Reward participation rather than the biggest numbers

Choose a format that works for the members you want to reach. A staff-supported first-workout challenge suits a different group from an experienced lifting competition. Do not put both groups on the same leaderboard.

For a simple consistency challenge, let participants agree a realistic training schedule with staff. Recognise following that schedule rather than rewarding the most sessions, the heaviest lift or an unbroken daily streak.

Example: a four-week challenge where each member chooses their planned training days with a staff member and checks in once a week. The schedule is individual; the shared activity is the weekly check-in.

Make the rules easy to follow

Write a short brief before inviting members. Explain who it is for, when it starts and ends, how participation is recorded and who to speak to for help. Keep an alternative available for members who do not want their name or results displayed.

  1. Name a staff member who owns the challenge and answers questions.
  2. Agree the participation rules and any reward before launch.
  3. Explain how members join and how they can leave.
  4. Ask permission before sharing names, photographs or progress.
  5. Plan a weekly check-in and an end-of-challenge conversation.

Use speclo to support the workouts

Members can use speclo to follow and record workouts based on your gym’s equipment. Before the challenge starts, check the equipment list and help participants select your gym in the app.

Run the challenge rules, invitations and check-ins through your staff and existing communication channels. This guide describes a staff-led activity; it does not rely on a speclo challenge leaderboard, group chat or automated campaign.

Recorded workouts can support a conversation about participation, but they are not a complete attendance record. A member may train without recording a session in speclo.

Help members get started

Review participation and plan the next step

At the end, count how many members joined, how many took part and how many responded to the final check-in. Keep the definitions consistent. Ask staff which questions repeated and ask members whether the format fitted their routine.

Do not treat completing a challenge as proof that someone will renew their membership. Review membership outcomes separately in your membership system. Use the final conversation to agree what each member wants to continue after the challenge ends.
